For this installation, we emulated a specific work by Edgar Degas entitled “Three Dancers in an Exercise Hall.” Our work creates the illusion of this impressionist painting with the same integrity as Degas’, but through a more multidimensional approach.
Contrast is a large theme of our piece. The serene, impressionistic nature of the background is contrasted with the tension of the dancers’ positions in the foreground. There is also a juxtaposition between the two-dimensional nature of the background, and the three-dimensional nature of the living dancers in the foreground. These dancers are the primary focus of the installation.
Through this contrast comes harmony. This interaction between the form of the dancers and the subdued tones of the background creates harmony that unites the three-dimensional figures with the two-dimensional background.
